ConAgra and Showtime II are both considering stopping of the use of the flavor chemical diacetyl, which gives the popcorn its buttery flavor. The chemical has already been shown to cause bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare life-threatening disease often called popcorn lung, among the factory workers and one doctor and a clinic specializing in lung diseases, is concerned it could show up in consumers too. According to the article, it could be a year to find a replacement flavoring agent.
